“They need someone like Ivan Toney” – Ex-Super Eagles winger unsure Zirkzee will deliver for Manchester United

Former Super Eagles and Monaco winger, Victor Ikpeba Nosa, has urged Manchester United to sign another striker before the transfer window slams shut, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Red Devils signed Dutch striker, Joshua Orobosa Zirkzee, on a €42.5m deal from Bologna to bolster their attack and reduce the reliance on Rasmus Hojlund.

The former Bayern Munich striker immediately hit the ground running at the Theatre of Dreams, scoring an 87th-minute goal to give United all three points against Fulham on Friday.

Ikpeba, speaking on the Monday Night Football Show on SuperSports, was sceptical about Zirkzee’s ability to lead the line after the 23-year-old described himself as a striker and half.

The former Borussia Dortmund attacker urged Manchester United to look for another striker before the transfer window closes, citing Ivan Toney as a perfect fit for the three-time UEFA Champions League winners.

“We don’t judge players in their first games. It’s good for his confidence. Signing a big-name striker will be helpful, as a striker who can score twenty goals in a season and has that consistency up front. They need something different, like Ivan Toney. I think he has ‘issues’ with Brentford. If they can go for him, that would be good for Manchester United. He’s a tall lad, and he bothers defenders. He’s very good aerially and technically with the ball. He can take on defenders. That would be a plus for the team if they can go for him,” Ikpeba revealed.

Toney has been linked with a move away from Brentford in the past seasons, but the club are demanding a fee of around €70m, which might be far from realistic as the 27-year-old has less than twelve months left on his contract. The England forward has interest from Saudi Clubs, as per The Telegraph.

He was a part of the England team that lost the EURO 2024 final to Spain in Germany earlier this summer.
