Nigerian attacker Gift pens new deal at reigning kings of Norway

Reigning Norwegian Eliteserien champions Bodo Glimt have announced the signing of Nigerian attacker Gift Sunday from the P Sports Academy, Soccernet.ng reports.

Over the years, Norway has served as a pipeline for Nigerian players to break into mainstream Europe. While some start from the lower tiers, other join the big teams and then make their way up from there.

Norwegian side Bodo Glimt has been a fertile ground for many Nigerian players, and the latest player to join them is 18-year-old forward Gift Sunday.

The club announced on Sunday that the Nigerian star penned a deal that will keep him there until 2028. Following his transfer, Gift expressed satisfaction with the deal.

“It is a great experience for me to sign my first professional contract with such a big club as Glimt. It’s a dream come true,” Gift said, per the club’s website.

The 18-year-old forward was signed for Bodo Glimt’s first team and is expected to start getting minutes this season.

Gift will be hoping that the moves serves as a launchpad for a big move soon. He joins the long list of Nigerians who have started their European sojourn in Norway.

Historically, Nigerian players often get big moves after spending time in Norway. For example, Gift Orban, made a name for himself after moving from Norwegian second tier side Stabaek to Belgian side Gent. Also, Victor Boniface broke into mainstream Europe after moving from Bodo Glimt to Belgian side Royale Union SG.

Other prominent players like Odion Ighalo, Chidera Ejuke, Igoh Ogbu, and Akor Adams have plied this route.
