Rangers coach Philippe Clement has revealed that the club will only let Cyriel Dessers leave if they get a big transfer fee, Soccernet.ng reports.
Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers has been in splendid form for Rangers in recent weeks. The 29-year-old Nigerian striker has scored five goals in his last four games for the Gers.
His most recent haul was a brace in Rangers’ 4-0 win over Ross County in a Scottish Premiership fixture on Saturday. Dessers looked to have settled in well after weeks of speculations over his future.
The former Genk man was heavily linked with a transfer to Greek side PAOK and Serie A club Cagliari before the start of the season, but it failed to materialize.
It seemed like Dessers would favour an exit at the time, due to the backlash he was always getting from Gers fans. Nonetheless, the Nigeria international came out to debunk any exit talks.
Still, with the transfer window open, a lot could change in a few days.
Meanwhile, Rangers coach Philippe Clement has revealed that the club is unwilling to let the 29-year-old leave now because they have not received a favorable offer.
“We have talked to the board if we will let him go if a bid comes. But we can only let a player leave if for that amount, we can get a better player in that position and one in another position. Otherwise you work backwards and that is not the idea,” Clement said.
“So clearly, there wasn’t a bid that was enough to let Dessers go. He is also someone that loves to Rangers. He loves the shirt and he wants to die for the shirt.
“In the good moment and in the difficult moments, he is one of the guys that was fighting hard for the team.
“I think he deserves a lot of praise for the stick he got when he first came here. Maybe in moments he wasn’t good enough, and he knew that he was missing things. But with what he has been doing in the last couple of months, he’s just a really good striker and a really good player.
Dessers has often been maligned by Rangers fans. But if he can continue within current form and lead them to the Premiership title, he could become a fans’ favorite soon.
