“Easy decision” – Nigerian midfielder reflects on joining Southampton from Chelsea

Igbo-Nigerian midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu has joined English Premier League side Southampton on a season-long loan from Chelsea, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 20-year-old’s performances during Chelsea’s pre-season tour in the USA turned heads, as he found the back of the net against Wrexham and secured a late equaliser in a friendly against Inter Milan at Stamford Bridge.

Despite these promising displays, Ugochukwu, who made 15 appearances during his debut season at Chelsea, has been sent on loan to Southampton to gain valuable first-team experience. Chelsea sees this move as a crucial step in the young midfielder’s development.

For Ugochukwu, who is keen on emulating former Chelsea player Mikel Obi, the decision to join the Hampshire-based club was a straightforward one.

“I feel very happy. Southampton has a great history. A lot of great players came over here and played for Southampton, so I’m very happy to be part of the team now,” Ugochukwu shared on Southampton’s official website.

“It was a very easy decision. They just came back to the Premier League. When I heard Southampton, when I spoke to the gaffer as well, I said, ‘I have to come here.’ I’m just here to work hard and give everything for the fans and for myself as well.”

Southampton, who recently secured their return to the Premier League by winning the Championship playoffs, will provide Ugochukwu with the perfect platform to continue his development in English football.

Chelsea confirmed the move on social media, extending their best wishes to Ugochukwu for the upcoming season.

The loan spell at Southampton is expected to offer the young midfielder regular playing time, helping him to hone his skills and further establish himself in the Premier League.
