Nigerian forward Chuba Akpom may be forced to remain at Ajax this summer as no club has made any concrete offer for him, Soccernet.ng reports.
Akpom joined Ajax last summer in a €12.3 million transfer from English Championship side Middlesbrough. After registering 29 goals and two assists in 42 appearances at Middlesbrough in the previous season, Akpom was expected to take the Eredivisie by storm, but that did not happen.
The 28-year-old forward was limited to 25 league appearances, many of which were off the bench. Nonetheless, he still churned out eleven goals and three assists.
This summer, there were strong talks that Akpom was going to leave Amsterdam to get more game time outside. He was linked with a transfer to English Premier League club Nottingham Forest, but nothing concrete came out of it.
This season, things have started to look up for the Nigerian forwards, as coach Francesco Farioli has given him a starting shirt in five of Ajax’s six games. But he has not registered any goal contribution yet.
Meanwhile, the uncertainty regarding Akpom’s future has not been sorted yet, but the Nigerian may have to stay with the former Dutch champions. This is as Ajaxshowtime have revealed that Ajax have not been contacted for Akpom’s services recently.
If the status quo remains the same Akpom would have to stay at Ajax until January at least.
