Super Eagles star Bruno Onyemaechi snubs European clubs, names NPFL side as his favorite team

Unlike many Nigerian players who support some of the big clubs in Europe, Onyemaechi has his heart with a club in Nigeria

Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi has stated that he is a big fan of Nigeria Premier Football League club Heartland, Soccernet.ng reports.

Onyemaechi has been in Europe since 2018, starting from Feirense’s youth team before slowing rising through the ranks. He then joined Portuguese top flight side Boavista two seasons ago, and he has been a regular for them since then.

Just like many Nigerian footballers, the 25-year-old left-back started playing football in the country before getting their big break.

Onyemaechi started playing football from the streets of Owerri, but unlike many Super Eagles stars who were supporting clubs outside the country, the Boavista man had eyes for only one Nigerian club.

In a recent interview, Onyemaechi revealed that he was a big fan of NPFL side Heartland when he was younger and even wanted to play for the club.

“As a young boy in Nigeria, I supported my local team Heartland”, Onyemaechi told Home of Nigerian Footballers.

“When I was growing up, I always went to the stadium to watch the games. When they opened the trials, I tried to go there with the hope that they would pick me to play for them, but it was difficult because they said I was too young for the Nigerian league, so I gave up.”

Heartland got relegated from the NPFL last season after finishing in 19th place with 38 points.

Meanwhile, Onyemaechi is currently preparing for pre-season with Boavista. The club narrowly survived relegation from the Primera Liga last season, but they will be looking forward to a better performance last season.
