Key South African stars from 2023 AFCON semi-final against Nigeria doubtful for revenge mission

Bafana Bafana of South Africa targets a must-win victory over the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Friday

Two South African players, Teboho Mokoena and Ronwen Williams, pivotal figures in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations clash against Nigeria, are uncertain for the upcoming Friday showdown, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set for their second encounter against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa as part of the ongoing 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Williams, who guarded the goalpost during the 2023 AFCON semi-final, and Mokoena, whose crucial penalty kick in the 90th minute extended the match to extra time, leading to a penalty shootout, are both facing doubts for the Nigeria trip.

South African media outlet, iDiski Times, reported that Broos disclosed four of his players, including Williams and Mokoena, arrived in camp with minor injuries.

“Little problems with Teboho [Mokoena], Aubrey Modiba, Bathusi Aubaas, and Ronwen Williams,” said the Belgian coach.

However, Broos expressed confidence that these issues wouldn’t hinder the team’s preparations for the clash.

He added: “Uhm, nothing to worry about, but okay, the little problem is there, but it will give us no problem for the game on Friday. So the guys will train with us, Ronwen a little bit less because he has a shoulder, but for the rest, we don’t make problems about that yet.”

The critical match leaves both Finidi George and Hugo Broos at a crossroads, as they aim for a crucial three points to bolster their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup tournament.
