Analyzing NFF’s must-qualify World Cup strategy: What lies ahead for Finidi George?

Finidi George led the Super Eagles of Nigeria to a draw against South Africa and a loss to Benin Republic in the continuation of their 2026 World Cup qualifiers

The Nigeria Football Federation had a strategy with the Minister of Sports to discuss the future of the Super Eagles of Nigeria and other pressing matters, Soccernet.ng reports.

After the meeting, the new Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George, was spotted alongside other officials. Questions have been raised in the Nigerian football community over the future of the former Ajax star.

Since the exit of Jose Peseiro, who left after the expiration of his contract, the Nigerian national team he left with 2023 Africa Cup of Nation’s Silver medal has managed a victory, two losses and a draw.

His former assistant, Finidi, has managed this team, whose recent 2026 World Cup performance—where the Super Eagles lost against the Benin Republic and drew South Africa—has sparked fear of a dented hope for a World Cup ticket.

The Outcome of the NFF Meeting

Following a crucial meeting held by the NFF Executive Committee, a series of impactful decisions were announced to address pressing issues within Nigerian football.

In a candid admission, the committee expressed remorse to the nation for the Super Eagles’ subpar performance during the ongoing FIFA World Cup qualifiers. With just four victories out of ten matches, the team’s underwhelming results have left fans disheartened.

In response to the disappointing outcomes, the NFF outlined a comprehensive plan to revitalise the squad’s prospects for future competitions.

Central to these plans is the commitment to bolster the team’s roster and tactical approach ahead of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers and the continuation of the World Cup qualifiers in March 2025.

A pivotal decision emerging from the meeting is the intention to recruit an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles.

This strategic move is poised to inject fresh perspectives and strategies into the team’s dynamics as they gear up for crucial upcoming fixtures.

NFF Eyes Antonio Conceicao for Super Eagles Technical Adviser Role

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is reportedly considering Portuguese coach Antonio Conceicao for the position of Super Eagles Technical Adviser, according to OGN.

Antonio Conceicao

Conceicao, who previously managed the Cameroon national team, has expressed interest in the role following the resignation of Peseiro in February. Initially, the NFF opted for local coach Finidi George, but the decision appears to be under reconsideration.

Conceicao has been inactive since departing from his position with Cameroon in 2022. Although he aimed to return to his former role in Cameroon, he did not secure the job.

The 62-year-old brings a wealth of experience in African football, notably leading Cameroon to a third-place finish in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

As the NFF seeks to enhance the Super Eagles’ performance, Conceicao’s potential appointment is seen as a strategic move to leverage his expertise and familiarity with the African football landscape.

What Is Finidi’s Fate As The Super Eagles Boss?

The NFF has chosen a fresh coaching structure for the Super Eagles, naming a foreign coach as a technical adviser alongside Finidi.

Finidi-George

Finidi, the former Nigerian international who guided Enyimba FC to their ninth Nigeria Premier Football League title, will continue as chief coach.

This innovative setup keeps Finidi’s contract intact with the NFF but restrains his authority as head coach.

Meanwhile, Portuguese tactician Conceição, rumoured for the technical adviser role, is anticipated to lend his expertise to mentor Finidi in his position.
