Bayer Leverkusen are on the brink of making Bundesliga history by completing an undefeated season. Today, they face Augsburg in their final league match.
Managed by Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen could become the first Bundesliga team to go through a season without a loss. This achievement has eluded even the greatest Bayern Munich teams.
Leverkusen’s form has been extraordinary, remaining unbeaten across all competitions for 50 games — a European record in the modern era. They are also set to compete in the German Cup and Europa League finals.
A victory over Augsburg would secure Leverkusen 90 points from 34 games, matching the second-highest points tally in German football history.
Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has been instrumental to their success.
Recently named the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season, Boniface scored 13 league goals and provided nine assists in 22 appearances. He has totaled 20 goals and 10 assists across all competitions this season.
For Alonso, today’s match is the first of three finals this month. The team is determined to stay unbeaten and win all three competitions.
“Tomorrow could be historical,” Alonso said. “We want to stay unbeaten and be the first team to do the full season without a defeat in the Bundesliga. It will feel like the first of three finals.”
The former Liverpool midfielder added, “It’s an important and special game for us. Before we get the trophy we still have 90 minutes to play. We are of course also looking forward to celebrating after the game with our fans.”
Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick called the match “like a final,” and captain Lukas Hradecky said the team had “immortality” in sight.
Regardless of the result, Leverkusen will lift the Bundesliga shield on Saturday, having already secured the title.
