Veteran Super Eagles defender bags one-year contract extension with Rangers

The Nigerian defender is out of contract this summer but it's reported that the 35-year-old will extend his stay at Ibrox.

Veteran Super Eagles and Rangers defender, Leon Aderemi Balogun, has signed a new deal that will see him stay at the club for another year, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 35-year-old joined the Scottish record Champions for a second spell from Queens Park Rangers last summer, but the move didn’t pan out how he wanted it, as he could only play 18 games all season.

After signing for the Gers on a year contract for a second stint, Balogun’s contract was set to expire at the end of this season.

Soccernet.ng earlier reported that Rangers boss, Philippe Clement, was impressed with his performances towards the end of the season before the former Mainz 05 man picked up an injury that kept him out of the Scottish Cup final. The 46-time capped Super Eagles defender is also keen on extending his stay at Ibrox.

According to The Scottish Sun, Philippe Clement has rewarded Balogun’s performances with a new deal that will see him continue at the club for another season.

Rangers are set to bolster their central-defensive options over the coming weeks and it’s believed Levski Sofia stopper – Jose Cordoba, is top of their wishlist.

While Rangers are in renewal talks with John Souttar, Connor Goldson, Ben Davies and Leon King, they will also be parting ways with John Lundstram, Borna Barisic, Ryan Jack and John McLaughlin who are all out of contract at the end of the season, and Balogun’s experience will help the club’s new signings to settle in nicely.

Balogun last played for Nigeria in their 10-0 win over São Tomé and Príncipe, coming off the substitute’s bench with 19 minutes left to play.
