Former Serie A champions AC Milan have officially announced that Stefano Pioli will leave the position by the end of the season, Soccernet.ng reports.
Pioli joined the Rossoneri in October 2019 after Marco Giampolo was sacked following a poor start to the season. Before Pioli, AC Milan were struggling to return to their status as the best club in Italy. The previous season, they had finished fifth in the Serie A.
However, in his first campaign with the club, he led them to a sixth-place finish in the Italian top flight. But after that, they finished second in the Serie A in the following season. Then, they eventually won the Scudetto in the 2021/22 campaign.
Nonetheless, AC Milan’s board have grown impatient with Pioli because of the team’s struggles in continental competitions and their inability to challenge for the Serie A title.
This season, The Rossoneri were knocked out of the Champions League in the group stage. They qualified for the Europa League after finishing third, but they lost the quarterfinals to Roma.
In the Serie A, AC Milan sit second, 19 points below Inter Milan. Despite their second-place finish, the club has announced that Pioli will leave the job after their final game of the season against Salernitana on Sunday.
Super Eagles forward Samuel Chukwueze has not enjoyed a lot of opportunities with Pioli as coach, albeit that is due to the Nigerian’s inability to prove himself.
However, Chukwueze would have to work and prove himself to a new coach in the summer. Former Roma boss Paulo Fonseca is the favorite to get the job.
