Leicester City is set to face Blackburn Rovers in their final EFL Championship clash for the 2023-24 season after being crowned champions with their victory against Preston, reports Soccernet.ng.
Meanwhile, Nigerian attacker Kelechi Iheanacho will be targeting a final opportunity with the team, having been given limited playing time since his return from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
So far this season, the Nigerian star has only made 10 starts for the Foxes and has been dropped from the squad since Leicester’s clash against Millwall.
Rumours have suggested that there has been some friction between Iheanacho and his manager, Enzo Maresca, who reportedly advised him not to accept Nigeria’s invitation for the AFCON, a suggestion Iheanacho eventually disregarded.
In today’s press conference, as revealed by Leicester Mercury, Maresca sought to defuse the situation.
“I already mentioned in January, during the window, when we had some issues. I said it was not the moment. At the end of the season, we can talk about it. The same thing with the financial problems. Nobody told me, which I don’t think is the right thing to do. There are things we need to clarify. For the rest, we are fantastic. We are all happy.” he said.
However, rumours within the football community suggest that Iheanacho has not yet signed a new contract with the team, possibly due to his limited playing time despite Leicester’s return to the Premier League.
Nevertheless, he hopes to make a final appearance for the squad, considering Leicester no longer has anything to lose, allowing other players to rest and providing him with the opportunity to showcase his abilities once more for potential suitors.
