Sevilla Femenino’s forward, Tony Payne, has addressed the issue of Super Falcons players scoring more goals for their clubs than for their country, as reported by Soccernet.ng.
Players like Asisat Oshoala, renowned for her scoring prowess at Barcelona Feminine and Bay FC, have seen a drop in their goal output when playing for the national team.
Despite a 5-0 and 2-1 victory against the Cape Verde women’s national team, the Super Falcons have struggled to find the net in their last three matches, sparking concerns in the Nigerian football community.
Payne, however, attributes this discrepancy to the higher level of competition at the national level compared to clubs.
“Obviously, the national level is quite high. When you are playing in the national team, the connection might not be as strong by default, but we have a really good team and we trust each other, and I think the goals will come,” she stated.
The Super Falcons recently secured a 1-0 victory against South Africa’s Banyana Banyana at The MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja, moving them closer to qualifying for the Olympics after 16 years.
According to Payne, Randy Waldrum’s side controlled the tie against South Africa and played an impressive game overall.
“We had a really great game, much control, and attacked them a lot. They didn’t seem to have many chances against us, except in the second half. We are feeling confident after the win at home and hoping to step it up in our next game to seal our tickets for Paris,” she added.
The Super Falcons have arrived in Pretoria for the second leg of their doubleheader clash against South Africa, scheduled for Tuesday.
