Championship: Ndidi’s goal puts Leicester City a step away from EPL promotion after beating West Brom

Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi scored the opening goal for Leicester City in their 2-1 win over West Brom at the Kings Power Stadium on Saturday, Soccernet.ng reports.

Leicester City welcomed West Brom to the Kings Power Stadium on Saturday for their crucial Championship game. The Foxes had lost their last two games and needed to return to winning ways to keep their place at the top of the Championship. On the other hand, West Brom were targeting a win to remain in contention for a play-off spot.

Coach Enzo Maresca named Nigerian midfielder Ndidi in his starting eleven, while Kelechi Iheanacho was not named in the matchday squad.

The visitors dominated the fixture from the beginning, creating some good chances in the opening embers. However, they were wasteful, and Leicester City took advantage.

In the 22nd minute, Wout Faes sent a cross from the left of Leicester City’s attack, which Ndidi quickly reacted to. His first touch was saved by West Brom’s goalkeeper, but he got to the rebound and rifled the ball into the roof of the net to give the Foxes the lead.

After that Leicester City took charge of the tie, dominating play and creating more chances. They got an opportunity to double their lead in the 45th minute from the spot. However, Jamie Vardy fluffed his spot kick.

Nonetheless, the English man was not to be denied, as he scored the second goal for Leicester City in the 65th minute. However, Jed Wallace pulled one back for West Brom eleven minutes later to set up the game for a frenetic finish.

Nigeria forward Josh Maja was introduced onto the game in the 82nd minute to add some bit to West Brom’s attack, but he was unable to produce an equalizer. It eventually ended 2-1 for Leicester City, taking them to 91 points, four points above the playoff spots.

Aside from his goal, Ndidi registered 30 touches, 81% pass accuracy, one interception, and two clearances.

As it stands, Leicester City just need to pick four points from their remaining three games this season.
