Victor Osimhen: Super Eagles striker misses out on N17.6 billion largesse after Napoli’s loss to Barcelona

The Nigerian striker is the highest-paid player in the Napoli squad after signing a new contract late last year

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen and Napoli are out of the UEFA Champions League after losing 3-1 (4-2) to Barcelona on Tuesday night, Soccernet.ng reports.

Osimhen scored in the first leg of the clash to hand the Italian champions a 1-1 draw at the Diego Maradona Stadium.

However, the Nigerian forward could not find his range as goals from Fermín López, João Cancelo, and Robert Lewandowski gave Barcelona a comfortable victory at Camp Nou.

With the defeat, Napoli missed out on reaching the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

Even as significantly, Osimhen and his Napoli teammates will not receive the monetary gift that club President Aurelio di Laurentiis had promised the players should they beat Barcelona.

Ahead of the fixture, Di Laurentiis had confirmed that he would give the Napoli players at least €10 million [17.62 billion naira) if they knock out Barcelona on Tuesday.

Osimhen and his mates will no longer be entitled to that generosity.

It is a big miss, though, considering that Osimhen’s gross annual salary is €12,820,000.

At a calculated weekly salary of €246,538, Osimhen is the highest earner at Napoli.

The 25-year-old still has three years and €38,460,000 gross remaining with Napoli.

Although, it is almost certain that he will leave the Italian club this summer, with English and French clubs interested in his services.
