Report: NFF set to lure Peseiro back to Super Eagles coaching role with improved contract offer

Jose Peseiro led the Super Eagles in 23 matches during his 22-month stint as the coach, winning eleven games and drawing four.

The Nigeria Football Federation have reportedly offered Jose Peseiro an improved contract which would see him remain the head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Soccernet.ng reports.

Peseiro, 63, was announced as Nigeria’s head coach in May 2022, and the AFCON 2023 was the only tournament he featured in for the Super Eagles, leading the team to second place in Ivory Coast.

The former Porto manager took a pay cut of $50,000 to stay in charge of the three-time CAF Champions till the end of the AFCON tournament, but the terms of the contract expired last month, and he has been linked with several jobs in a short time.

According to multiple reports, the NFF has made a contract extension offer to Jose Peseiro, with discussions ongoing to reach an agreement on finances, which is the main issue holding the deal from happening.

Soccernet.ng earlier reported that Augustine Eguavoen has been appointed as the coach of the Nigerian football team on an interim basis in Peseiro’s absence, pending the time a new contract is put on the table, or till another coach is hired.

As per OwnGoalNigeria, an offer of 80,000 dollars has been made by the representative of the NFF to Peseiro’s camp.

The Minister for Sports, John Enoh, is insistent on keeping the 63-year-old in charge for the remainder of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying games, with their close relationship influencing the decision.

Peseiro, on another hand, wants to keep his options open and properly assess the offers on his table before making any commitments to the NFF.

The offer is yet to be confirmed by the Nigerian Football Federation nor the parties of the Portuguese tactician, but an update will be provided soon.
