On 12 December 2021, Eguavoen was appointed manager of Nigeria on an interim basis for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, following the departure of Gernot Rohr.
Super Eagles technical director, Augustine Owen Eguavoen, has taken over the coaching role of the Nigerian Football team after Jose Peseiro’s exit, Soccernet.ng reports.
Peseiro, 63, was appointed as the coach of the Super Eagles after Nigeria’s exit from the AFCON 2021 tournament in Cameroon, taking office in May 2022.
The Portuguese led Nigeria to the AFCON 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast, but his team fell short of glory in the final, with Sebastien Haller putting the nail to the coffin of the exhausted Super Eagles.
The contract of the former Porto manager ended in February and he vacated his role on the sidelines for the Super Eagles, leaving the team despite taking a pay cut.
Soccernet.ng understands that the team’s technical director, Augustine Eguavoen, will take charge of the Three-time AFCON winners on an interim basis, till a permanent solution is sorted out.
The former Super Eagles right wing-back was in charge of the Nigerian team at the AFCON 2021 tournament in Cameroon, following the exit of the former coach, Gernot Rohr.
The 58-year-old remained in charge of the team after Nigeria were knocked out of the AFCON tournament in Cameroon at the round of sixteen stage by Tunisia.
Eguavoen was the team’s technical director when they took a silver medal at the AFCON 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast.

They should use Emmanuel Amunike.
It's time we note Nigerian coach will be far better
We forget the past easily. ls it the same Eguavoen that cost Nigeria last world cup ticket? ls he the best coach in Nigeria presently?
What an inner circulation!
eagles can play friendlies with clubs in europe.to expose the defiency in the team going forward.. not necessarily a national team that just camp for a day or two .. by the time dey got beaten 4 1 , 5 1 , 3 0 then nff wil no wat to do with Coach problem. . i remember westerhof took us to Copenhagen, fc Zurich wer I scored a goal den in a game.before Algiers 90.
this how we got a team we even trained by the sea side to build our muscles .
Eguavoen should not be the coach . Amuneke should is the coach Nigeria needs now
Nigerians never learn anything must our officials at the helm of affairs keep taking us for a ride which one is Eguvaoen again I beg we should stop this stupidity.... You don't change a winning team and if you must Eguvaoen is not the man period.
Not Egunavoen, please. Soccer fans have seen him enough.
Mr. Amunike is hungry and ready to prove. Mr. George should work with him. The sports ministry and NFf should extend full supports. Now is time to get started. Delay is dangerous.
i préfère à foreign coach to indiginenous coach thatl cost us loosing most of our talented stars to another countries because of their corruptions
I was not expecting Augustine as the head coach!
Amunike is a hungry man,.
