AFCON 2023: “Uzoho can do the job”-Gernot Rohr optimistic on Super Eagles’ trophy credentials

Rohr was Nigeria’s coach at the last AFCON, and he believes the team have the quality to emerge victorious in the Ivory Coast this year

Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has stated that Nigeria are one of the favourites to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast later this month, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Super Eagles will be looking to claim a fourth African crown when they travel to the Ivory Coast for the 2023 AFCON next week.

Coach Peseiro has one of the most talented crop of players in Nigeria’s history, and there are high expectations from most Nigerian fans.

However, the team has struggled in some aspects, especially since José Peseiro took over as coach. The Super Eagles have struggled to win some seemingly important games, and Peseiro has struggled to find a trustworthy goalkeeper, as Francis Uzoho has consistently made errors that have cost the team.

Ahead of the competition in Ivory Coast, former Super Eagles boss Rohr has expressed optimism over Nigeria’s chances.

“Nigeria is one of the favourites, of course. I saw the list. So many great players and [with] experience. The strikers are fantastic; they need stability to be complete,” Rohr told Osasu Obiayiuwana.”

On Nigeria’s goalkeeping problems, Rohr also believes that Uzoho will perform well at the AFCON. According to the Franco-German tactician, “Uzoho will do well.”.

Nigeria have been pitched against Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and hosts Ivory Coast at the AFCON. They begin their trophy pursuit on January 14.
