AFCON 2023: “Don’t give up on us” – Super Eagles captain urges fans to continue their support after disappointing Equatorial Guinea draw

William Troost-Ekong has been a regular for PAOK in the Greek Super League this season, since joining in the summer, starting ten games in the league.

Captain of the day for Super Eagles, William Troost-Ekong, has urged fans of Nigerian football to continue to support the team despite their opening draw against Equatorial Guinea, Soccernet.ng reports.

Iban Salvador broke the deadlock in Ivory Coast for the Equitoguinean side in the 36th minute before Victor Osimhen headed home the equalizer two minutes later.

The Super Eagles created loads of chances, as compared to their opponents one shot on target, but Jesus Owono stood strong to deny the Nigerians, with Zaidu Sanusi and Victor Osimhen scuffing clear-cut chances.

Paired with Semi Ajayi yesterday, Ekong anchored the defense line well, and made sure the goalkeeper was largely untested. Speaking in his post-match presser, the 30-year-old defender thanked the Nigerian fans for their support.

“I just want to say thank you for the support for the guys that came out there. Of course, we’re dissapointed, we feel the same way as you guys, we wanted to win today, but I think we have to look at the positives,” the former Watford defender said.

The 50-time capped Nigerian center-back mentioned the Super Eagles will do their best against Ivory Coast.

“We created a lot of chances, and on another day we would have won that game, and will be very motivated for Wednesday. Don’t give up on us,” the PAOK defender added.

The Super Eagles will take on The Elephants of Ivory Coast on Thursday in their second group A game as both teams look to gain ground in their strive to seal qualification.
