Five Takeaways from Super Falcons 2-1 win over Cape Verde

The Super Falcons are the record appearance holder for the WAFCON tournament, appearing in every edition since its inception in 1991.

The game witnessed another inspired performance from Okoronkwo Esther, who scored a brilliant solo goal in Praia to level the scores for the Super Falcons in the 2-1 win over Cape Verde, Soccernet.ng reports.

A late winner from Ajibade Rasheedat left no doubts for the travelling supporters that the Super Falcons are ready to give their all in the next WAFCON tournament.

Taking a deeper delve into the game, Soccernet.ng brings you five takeaways from the win in Cape Verde.

1. The Super Falcons put in a strong performance.

The tie was pretty much said and done after a 5-0 win in the first leg, and although it took a while for the team to warm up to the game in Praia, they showed great mentality by grabbing the game by the scruff of its neck and turning it on its head by securing a comeback in the late minutes of the match.

2. The Super Falcons have qualified for the WAFCON 2024 tournament.

The aggregate win means that the Super Falcons will be in Morrocco next year for the 15th edition of the Women’s African Cup of Nations tournament. The team will be looking to win the competition again, as they’ve participated in every edition to date.

3. Rasheedat Ajibade led by example.

Team captain on the night, the Atletico Madrid attacking midfielder didn’t just take charge of the team with her words, but showed resilience with her actions, stepping up to score the winning goal in the dying seconds of the game.

4. Esther Okoronkwo dazzles again

The 26-year-old Tenerife forward scored a brilliant solo goal to level the scores for the Super Falcons, after coming on to score a second-half brace in the home leg of the same fixture.

5. The team need to make the most of set-piece opportunities.

Despite defeating Cape Verde 7-1 on aggregate, the Super Falcons struggled with connection to crosses on either side of the pitch and could prove costly if they don’t work on it ahead of the tournament.
