EFL: Iheanacho on the bench as Daka leads Leicester to 3-0 victory over Rotherham United

Enzo Maresca’s Leicester City have lost just three games in the EFL Championships this season, with their sights set on a return to the English Premier League.

Super Eagles striker, Kelechi Iheanacho, watched on from the bench for the second game running as Leicester City put three past Rotherham United, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 27-year-old has just seven months left on his current contract. Unai Emery’s Aston Villa is reportedly eyeing Iheanacho as he struggles to get playing time under Enzo Maresca.

The former Manchester City forward last featured for The Foxes on the 2nd of December in their game against West Bromwich Albion. Since then, he has been absent from two gameday squad lists and has been on the bench for the past two games, but hasn’t played a minute of football.

Patson Daka opened the scoring for the hosts on the hour mark. A quick exchange of brilliant passes sent Wout Faes through on goal, but Rotherham’s Isak Johansson was equal to the task.

His parried shot fell kindly to Wilfred Ndidi, who fed Daka who then tapped home for the opener. The Zambian doubled the lead five minutes later from the spot, slotting the ball into the bottom corner of the goal.

Cesare Casadei put the game beyond doubts as he headed home from a beautiful Ricardo Pereira cross to send Maresca’s men six points clear at the top of the Championships summit.

Leicester City will be without Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho and Patson Daka as they resume their promotion charge in January. The trio will travel for the 2024 AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.
