Nigerians abroad: Utaka, Omeruo, Onyekuru, Nwakaeme on target; Adams fails PSG test

Soccernet.ng highlights some eye-catching displays from Nigerian footballers outside the country’s shores on Friday, November 3, 2023.

An injury kept Wilfred Ndidi out of Leicester City’s 0-1 loss to visiting Leeds United at the King Power Stadium in their Championship matchday 15 clash.

Kelechi Iheanacho was introduced into the fray moments after Georginio Rutter gave Leeds the lead, but the Super Eagles striker could not help the Foxes from falling to only their second defeat of the campaign.

After scoring seven goals in his first nine games in France, a lot was expected of Akor Adams when Montpellier made the trip to Paris on Friday to face PSG.

However, the Nigerian forward was kept quiet all game as goals from Lee Kang-In, Zaïre-Emery, and Vitinha propelled the Parisians to a 3-0 win.

In Azerbaijan, John Otto John and Turan ended on the losing side after falling to a 2-1 defeat at Səbail. John gave the visitors the lead in the 27th minute for his third goal in as many games, but Abdullazadə and Ramalingom struck twice in the second half to turn the tie in favour of the home side.

Sioni and Merani Tbilisi served up one of the games of the season in Georgia as the home team secured an 8-4 victory inside the Stadioni Tamaz Stepania.

Adebowale Ogunbufunmi came off the bench to score two of the visitors’ goals late in the encounter, but there was no stopping Sioni from soaring to their biggest win of the year 2023.

In Japan’s J2 League, 39-year-old Peter Utaka scored his 12th goal in 39 appearances to lift Ventforet Kofu to a 2-0 win at home to Roasso Kumamoto.

Over to Romania’s Liga I, where Politehnica Iași were held to a 1-1 draw by Oţelul.

The home side protected their first-half lead until Kehinde Fatai emerged from the bench to set up Oţelul’s equaliser with ten minutes left on the clock.

In Saudi Arabia, the Super Eagles duo of Anthony Nwakaeme and Henry Onyekuru were on target during Al Tai’s thrilling 3-3 draw with Al Fayha.

Nwakaeme opened the scoring for Al Fayha, but the visitors’ defence went to sleep afterwards, allowing their hosts to score three quick-fire goals in eight minutes.

Onyekuru, however, kick-started Al Fayha’s fightback in the 67th minute before Sakala earned the visitors a share of the spoils three minutes later.

In Turkey, Kenneth Omeruo scored his first goal of the season for Kasimpasa as they fell to a 2-1 loss at Galatasaray.

Wilfred Zaha scored on either side of the halftime break for Gala, but Omeruo headed home from a fine Aytaç Kara penalty to halve the deficit.

However, Kasimpasa could not find a late equaliser, falling to only their third defeat of the campaign.
