Osimhen has arguably been the best player at Napoli for the last two years, but he could leave on a free transfer
Napoli sporting director Mauro Meluso has revealed that the club is yet to reach an agreement with Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen for a new contract, Soccernet reports.
Osimhen has been one of Napoli’s best players for the last two years. Last season, the 24-year-old striker inspired the Partenopeans to their first Serie A title in 33 years, scoring 26 goals in 31 games. He also contributed five goals in the UEFA Champions League to help Napoli to their first-ever quarterfinal finish.
Following his performances for Napoli, the club has been looking to tie him down to a new contract as his current one expires in 2025.
However, both parties have failed to reach an agreement despite being on the negotiating table since the end of last season.
Osimhen’s relationship with the club has also suffered a dent following the TikTok video that the club posted to mock him. Also, club president Aurelio De Laurentiis has not helped issues as he has stated that he will sell the Nigerian striker if he refuses to sign a new deal.
Osimhen just returned to Napoli two weeks after the international break due to personal issues. Following his return, Napoli’s sporting director Meluso has stated that the status quo with the Nigerian striker remains as before.
“Osimhen is back in the city today. We’ve been negotiating for months; it’s a long negotiation. We will see how it goes, step by step,” Meluso said per Fabrizio Romano.
If Osimhen refuses to sign a contract extension, Napoli will be forced to sell him next summer. The club values Osimhen at over €120million, but they could end up selling him for a reduced fee.
