“Ibrahimovic-style” – How the European media reacted to Paul Onuachu’s sensational goal for Trabzonspor in Konyaspor win

The Nigerian forward has been in incredible form since leaving Southampton for the Turkish Super Lig

Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu scored twice at the Papara Park in Trabzon to guide Trabzonspor to an impressive 2-1 win over Konyaspor in their Turkish Super Lig clash on Friday, Soccernet.ng reports.

After a goalless opening half, Onuachu sidefooted home the opening goal for Trabzonspor in the 58th minute following good work from Arsenal star Nicolas Pepe.

However, 18 minutes later, Louka Daniel Prip equalised for Konyaspor to give the visitors hope of earning at least a share of the points.

But five minutes from stoppage time, Onuachu smashed home the winner for Trabzonspor in what is arguably the best goal of his career.

After fluffing his initial attempted shot, Enis Destan clipped the ball to the danger area, where Onuachu was on hand to pull off a stunning back-heel finish that blasted past French goalkeeper Paul Jean Bernardoni.

It is a goal that is as beautiful in its execution as the lovely teamwork that produced it.

With a resemblance to the sensational goal that won Olivier Giroud the Puskas award six years ago and Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s stunner for PSG against Bastia, it is not strange that the European press has been talking about Onuachu’s wonder strike.

Here are a few headlines of how some of the media platforms reported the goal:

Sky Sports, Italy: “Onuachu, gol di scorpione con il Trabzonspor!”
(translated: “Onuachu, scorpion goal with Trabzonspor“)

France’s Bein Sports: “Süper Lig: Un incroyable but à la Ibrahimovic pour Onuachu!”
(translated: “Süper Lig: An incredible Ibrahimovic-style goal for Onuachu!”)

Portugal’s A Bola: “De calcanhar e com acrobacia, que grande golo na liga turca!”
(translated: “With heel and acrobatics, what a great goal in the Turkish league“)

United Kingdom’s Daily Mail: “On loan Southampton striker Paul Onuachu channels his inner Zlatan Ibrahimovic and scores sensational acrobatic volley to secure 2-1 win for Turkish side Trabzonspor”

Give Me Sport: “Paul Onuachu scores Puskas contender in Trabzonspor 2-1 Konyaspor”

Trabzonspor’s head coach, Abdullah Avci has also stated that Onuachu’s brilliant finish is an early contender for the Goal of the Year award.

Onuachu has six goals in eight appearances for Trabzonspor, and he is the chief reason the former Turkish champions have risen to third on the Super Lig table.
