Il Partenopei had not won the Italian league title in more than three decades until they outclassed all other teams to climb to the podium in May
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has credited former Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti as the mastermind behind the club’s successful campaign last season, Soccernet.ng reports.
Napoli romped to the Serie A title in May after winning 28 games and accumulating 90 points, a massive 16 points more than their closest challengers, Lazio. It was Il Partenopei’s third Scudetto in history and the club’s first since the 1989-90 season.
Osimhen is considered one of the biggest determining factors to Napoli’s success as he netted 26 league goals – almost a third of all the goals they scored.
However, Osimhen is convinced that Spalletti was even more instrumental to Napoli’s success.
The Nigerian forward pointed out the hard work the former AS Roma manager put into his work in Naples as the key to their Scudetto win.
“Spalletti was the highlight of our Scudetto-winning season,” Osimhen said on the Obione podcast.
“He was instrumental. He lived in his office for close to 7 months.
“In training, we’d fight like it was a rugby match; it was do or die.”
Spalletti left his role as Napoli’s manager in the summer, with the club appointing Rudi Garcia as his replacement.
The champions are currently fourth on the Italian Serie A table, a massive ten points behind leaders Inter Milan.
