Two Super Eagles stars were in action for Nottingham Forest, but they failed to guide their side to victory
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi scored while compatriot Ola Aina got an assist, but those were not enough as Nottingham Forest fell to a 3-2 defeat at West Ham, Soccernet reports.
Nigerian stars Awoniyi and Aina were on the starting lineup for Steve Cooper’s Nottingham Forest side when they travelled to the London Stadium to take on West Ham.
After defeating Aston Villa last week, the Tricky Trees fancied their chances against an inconsistent West Ham side that had quality players.
The Hammers started the game remarkably, with Lucas Paqueta getting the opener in the third minute.
West Ham dominated the game, but a quick counter ensured that Forest drew level. Morgan Gibbs-White received the ball in the box, ran through on goal, and struck a shot, but it was saved by Emiliano Martinez. However, Awoniyi was lurking and rifled the ball into the net to make it 1-1.
The Tricky Trees got their second in the 63rd minute. Ola Aina made a quick dash forward after some nice play in midfield and teed up Anthony Elanga, who finished with aplomb in the box to make it 2-1.
However, Forest failed to hold on to their lead, as goals from Jarrod Bowen and Thomas Soucek sealed the 3-2 win for West Ham.
Nottingham Forest’s Nigerian stars Aina and Awoniyi got 76 minutes of action before they were hauled off for Serge Aurier and Chris Woods.
