Lookman was on the scoresheet for Atalanta as they claimed a tough win against new boys Genoa
Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman scored the vital opener in Atalanta’s hard-fought 2-0 victory over newly-promoted Genoa at the Gewiss Stadium, Soccernet reports.
Lookman got the nod to start when Atalanta played hosts to Genoa in their Serie A fixture. The former Leicester City man operated from the left in a forward partnership with Gianluca Scamacca and Charles De Ketelaere.
Atalanta controlled much of the first half, but they were unable to score. Lookman had a glorious chance to score in the 38th minute, but his effort was thwarted by Nicola Leali. Despite Atalanta’s attacks, the first half ended goalless.
However, in the second half, both teams showed more zeal. Lookman had another good chance in the box 18 minutes into the second period after some nice play from Atalanta. But his strike was saved by the Genoa goalie.
Nonetheless, La Dea’s quality eventually paid off in the 68th minute. Lookman showed great awareness to pounce on a cross from the left. He was under pressure from a Genoa defender, but he still eked out a strike despite being on the turf following a challenge. The referee ruled it out for offside, but after a VAR review, which took about four minutes, the goal was confirmed to be legitimate.
Lookman was later taken off in the 79th minute for Mario Pasalic. Genoa went on the offensive for the rest of the game. But after a quick counter, Ederson scored the second goal to make it 2-0 and put the game to bed.
According to Opta, Lookman’s goal was his 16th in 40 appearances for Atalanta in the Serie A. It ensured he equalled his goal tally in 118 appearances in the Big-5 European leagues – with Leicester, Fulham, Leipzig and Everton.
