Onuachu’s involvement in goal recorded as own goal: Super Eagles star reacts after Trabzonspor win

Paul Onuachu left Southampton FC during the summer transfer window to sign a season-long loan with Tranbsonspor

Southampton-owned forward, Paul Onuachu, was recently rumoured to be nursing injury concerns, played a crucial role in Trabzonspor’s victory over Alanyaspor at the Papara Park, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Super Eagles star was involved in a goal that secured all three points for the Black Sea Storm. He made a penetrating run into the heart of Alanyaspor’s defence, and the goal came about when Fidan Aliti inadvertently put the ball into his own net.

Curiously, Onuachu’s jubilation was short-lived, as the goal was ultimately counted as an own goal attributed to the Swiss international.

After the game, Onuachu emphasized the importance of securing three points. He admitted that it wasn’t their best performance but commended his teammates’ determination and fight.

“What was important for us today was 3 points. It was not our best football match, but we fought well. Our players who entered the game later showed an incredible example of fight,” he said, as quoted by Sabah Spor.

The tall Nigerian star, who moved from KRC Genk to England had a slow start at Southampton before moving to Trabzonspor on a season-long loan.

He has quickly adapted to life in Turkey, notching three goals in his five domestic league appearances so far. However, his quest for a fourth goal was thwarted when his effort was mistakenly counted as an own goal.

Despite the goal controversy, Trabzonspor’s victory catapulted them to fifth place in the Süper Lig standings with 15 points, trailing Fenerbahce, the league leaders, by eight points.
