Former Arsenal star Iwobi and ex-Chelsea lad Nwoko among nominees for Fulham’s GOTM award

The two players of Nigerian descent will battle seven others for the goalscoring honour

Super Eagles playmaker Alex Iwobi and former Chelsea schoolboy Chibuzor Nwoko are in the running for Fulham’s Goal of the Month award for September 2023, Soccernet.ng reports.

Iwobi’s nomination stems from his stellar performance in his starting debut for the Cottagers, where he delivered a stunning strike against Norwich City during the third round of the Carabao Cup on September 27.

In the 72nd minute, following a well-coordinated team move, the Nigerian international calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner, securing a vital second goal.

Iwobi, it would be recalled, joined Fulham from Everton on the final day of the summer transfer window.

However, Iwobi is not the only player of Nigerian descent vying for Fulham’s coveted goal-scoring honour.

Youngster Chibuzor Nwoko has thrown his hat in the ring with a brilliant goal of his own. Nwoko’s impressive strike came during a U18 Premier League faceoff against his former club, Chelsea, on September 16.

In the 18th minute of the game, the England U18 international fired a long-range shot into the top right corner, extending Fulham’s lead to two goals.

In a contest with nine contenders, Iwobi and Nwoko face stiff opposition from seven other players.

Among the notable nominees are Ollie O’Neill, who has secured a remarkable triple-nomination, along with Lilly Lambird, Tia Foreman, Callum Osmand, Madi Parsonson, Matt Dibley-Dias, and Callum McFarlane.

When signing for Fulham, Iwobi penned a five-year contract, binding him to Craven Cottage until the conclusion of the 2027-2028 season.

On the other hand, central midfielder Nwoko boasts a longstanding association with Fulham, dating back to his days as part of the U12 setup.
