The Nigeria international was once regarded as one of the best in his position
Atlético Madrid have reportedly set their sights on Nigeria international Wilfred Ndidi as a potential addition for the upcoming winter transfer window, Soccernet.ng reports.
Ndidi, who found himself relegated with Leicester City last season, is now plying his trade in the Championship.
During the summer transfer window, the Super Eagles midfielder was the subject of numerous speculations, with links to clubs like Bayern Munich and Nottingham Forest.
Despite the rumours, no deals materialised, and Ndidi remained with Leicester City, where his role could be pivotal as they aim to secure an immediate return to the Premier League.
However, the upcoming winter transfer window might see a change in Ndidi’s circumstances, as Atlético Madrid seeks to bolster their squad with a defensive midfielder, and Ndidi has emerged as a potential target.
According to reports from Todofichajes, as cited by Les-Transferts, Atlético Madrid have included Ndidi on their shortlist for a January move.
Presently, the former La Liga champions have Rodrigo De Paul, Saúl Ñíguez, and Pablo Barrios as their central midfield options.
Notably, two of these options are aged over 30, highlighting the need for a younger, dynamic presence in the middle of the park.
At 26 years of age, Ndidi fits the bill perfectly, offering athleticism and potential. Valued at €20 million, acquiring Ndidi could be a cost-effective move, considering that his contract with Leicester City is set to expire in June 2024.
In the current season, Ndidi has showcased his ability, contributing two goals and an assist in seven appearances across all competitions for the Foxes.
