Chelsea made move for Nottingham Forest’s Super Eagles star hours before transfer deadline

The Reds have three Nigeria internationals in their fold, but one could have been on the way to Stamford Bridge on transfer deadline day

Chelsea attempted to secure the services of Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi just 48 hours before the summer transfer window slammed shut, Soccernet.ng understands.

The Blues had already splurged a considerable sum on emerging talents, such as Christopher Nkunku, Moisés Caicedo, and Nicolas Jackson during the summer.

However, their plans took a hit when Nkunku suffered a devastating injury in early August, undergoing knee surgery that would keep him sidelined for four months.

With their attacking options diminished, Chelsea’s hierarchy sought a new offensive asset, and they turned their attention to Nottingham Forest.

As per The Athletic, Chelsea contacted Nottingham Forest, expressing interest in the prolific Nigerian striker Awoniyi.

Last season, Awoniyi was Forest’s top scorer, registering an impressive ten goals. He kicked off the new campaign in spectacular fashion, netting against the likes of Arsenal, Sheffield United, and Manchester United in his first three league fixtures in August.

However, the timing of Chelsea’s approach proved to be a critical factor. Given the mere 48-hour window left until the transfer deadline, Nottingham Forest rebuffed Chelsea’s advances, keeping Awoniyi at the City Ground.

Ultimately, Chelsea redirected their attention, securing the services of 21-year-old forward Cole Palmer from Manchester City for €47 million.

Fast forward to September 2nd, and Awoniyi would play a decisive role, albeit in a different context. In a surprising twist of fate, he provided the assist that led to Anthony Elanga’s winning goal as Nottingham Forest pulled off a stunning 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Nottingham Forest currently boast three Nigerian internationals in their ranks, with Awoniyi joined by Ola Aina and Emmanuel Dennis.
