Rangers were the slight favourites because of their home advantage, but they fluffed their lines in the end
Rangers coach Michael Beale has defended Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers after VAR ruled out their goal because the Nigerian committed a foul in the build-up to their goal, Soccernet reports.
Dessers started for Rangers when they welcomed close rivals Celtic to Ibrox for the first installment of the Old Firm derby. Before the game, Dessers talked tough, stating that he was going to give his all to ensure that the Gers emerged on top.
He fulfilled his promise in the first half, as he won the ball deep in Celtic’s half and played Kemar Roofe through on goal, who fired a rocket into the net.
However, after a VAR review, Dessers was adjudged to have fouled a Celtic player while trying to win the ball, and the goal was eventually cancelled.
Unfortunately for Rangers, Celtic took the lead just before the break through Kyogo Furuhashi. The Gers had a lot of opportunities in the second half, but they failed to score. Eventually, it ended 1-0.
Speaking after the game, Rangers boss Beale said he didn’t feel Dessers committed a foul.
“The VAR decision[to disallow our goal] I’m not sure about,” Beale said per Daily Record.
“I think Cyriel puts his foot down, and the boy[Rangers defender Lagerbi kicks him. I think he’s a lucky boy. I’m disappointed that goes against us.”
The Gers have the international break to reset. They resume action in the Scottish Premiership on the 16th of this month with a fixture at St. Johnstone.
