AFCONQ: Sao Tome and Principe land in Uyo to tackle Osimhen, Boniface, Awoniyi, Super Eagles

Sao Tome and Principe’s delegation of players and officials has touched down in Uyo, Nigeria, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Falcons and True Parrots Team arrived via the Victor Attah International Airport for the upcoming showdown with the Nigerian national team.

This fixture serves as the final chapter in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign, yet it bears the weight of a mere formality.

Nigeria have already secured their berth in the prestigious tournament. Meanwhile, Sao Tome and Principe find themselves on the sidelines, their dreams of AFCON glory having withered away.

The Super Eagles earned their passage to Ivory Coast 2023 with conviction, winning four of their five qualifying clashes.

Sao Tome and Principe in Uyo

One particular encounter etched itself into the annals of football history: the first-leg meeting with Sao Tome and Principe, where Nigeria unleashed a storm before sealing a resounding 10-0 victory.

The most memorable highlight of that win came from the enigmatic Victor Osimhen, who orchestrated six of those ten goals. The Napoli forward scored four and assisted another two.

Nigeria will want a repeat performance and head coach Jose Peseiro has summoned some of the country’s best strikers from Europe’s footballing clubs.

Serie A’s most valuable player Osimhen, Bundesliga’s Rookie of the Month award nominee Victor Boniface, Gent’s star Gift Orban, and Premier League Player of the Month nominee Taiwo Awoniyi are in the Nigerian squad for the Sao Tome game.
