“That’s only the beginning”- Dessers remains optimistic about Rangers despite slow start

The Gers have struggled in their first two games of the season, but Dessers is optimistic that they will hit their stride soon

Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers is optimistic that Rangers will soon pick form despite their slow start to the season, Soccernet reports.

The Gers have not won the Scottish Premiership in the last two seasons, as they have always been second-best to Celtic.

After a poor start to last season, Rangers sacked Giovanni Van Bronckhorst last November and appointed Michael Beale as coach.

The English manager has his first full campaign this season, and this summer, he has added a few players to his squad. Nigeria striker Dessers is one of the new players on Rangers’ roster after a €5.5million transfer from Cremonese.

However, things have not exactly gone smoothly so far for Rangers. They lost to Kilmarnock by a lone goal in their first game of the season last week. But they bounced back with a 2-1 victory over Servette in their UEFA Champions League qualifier on Wednesday.

Nonetheless, the victory was not entirely convincing, as the former Scottish Champions lacked the cutting edge in the final third and had to settle for a nervy finish.

Nigeria striker Dessers has featured in Rangers’ first two games, and he knows his side has had a shaky start. Still, he believes the team will grow as the season progresses, and the results will start coming.

“That’s what we wanted[the victory against Servette],” Dessers said per Football Scotland.

“Of course, after the loss[to Kilmarnock] on Saturday, we were not a bad team or anything like that.

“We knew we had to come out strong, and we showed the fans what we can give them and do as a team, especially the first half hour. I think we showed that.

“That’s only the beginning. We are going to grow in fitness and relationships and as a team, and it looks very promising.

Dessers scored his first Rangers goal last time out against Servette, and he would look to continue that run when his side can get their first Premiership win.
