“I didn’t lobby to be Sports Minister”- Sunday Dare’s successor John Enoh hits back at backlash

John Enoh, a farmer-turned-minister of sports, replaced Sunday Dare, who was appointed under the Buhari-led administration

The Minister of Sports, John Owan Enoh, has responded to inquiries regarding his lack of sports background as he takes on the role of the country’s 36th sports minister, Soccernet.ng reports.

Enoh, who previously served as a farmer before transitioning into sports, shared his perspective on the ground of being a sports man to run the affairs of the industry he has been positioned.

The Senator assumed the position following a reshuffle, succeeding Sunday Dare, appointed during Mohammadu Buhari’s administration.

Despite concerns raised by football fans, enthusiasts, and pundits about his ability to manage the sports industry without a sports background, Enoh defended his qualifications.

The 57-year-old, speaking to Daily Trust, addressed this issue in his office at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja shortly after taking office.

“I didn’t lobby to be sports minister. President Bola Tinubu saw me fit and decided to put the task of building sports in Nigeria. Since I was assigned this portfolio, I have been reading about sports,” Enoh stated.

“I don’t think you need to be an active sports participant for you to be the minister of sports. I think what is required is who can provide leadership, direction, someone who is transparent, understands the sector and repositions it and that is what I am bringing on board,” he explained.

“I was once a footballer. When I was appointed, some of my old mates called me to remind me of our playing days,” Enoh added.

The new minister, however, called upon the ministry’s staff, officials, and sports federations to contribute their wealth of experience and expertise. He stressed the importance of their combined efforts in ensuring that the country is well-represented in various competitions.

The Nigerian football community, however, hopes the new minister will bring about positive change owing to it needing a lot of revitalization as we advance.
