Heartache at Ibrox: Rangers part ways with ex-Flying Eagles and Bournemouth star

The former Nigeria youth international exits the Ibrox without a single first-team appearance

Glasgow Rangers have officially confirmed the mutual termination of the contract between the club and midfielder Nnamdi Ofoborh, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 23-year-old Nigerian midfielder departs Ibrox after a challenging period marked by persistent health problems that prevented him from making a single competitive appearance for the Scottish Premiership side.

Ofoborh’s association with Rangers began at the start of the 2021-22 season when he joined the club from Bournemouth under the management of Steven Gerrard.

Unfortunately, his time with the club was marred by a recurring heart issue that prevented him from participating in training or competitive matches.

The club issued a statement regarding Ofoborh’s departure, expressing their best wishes for his future endeavours:

“Rangers can today announce that the club and Nnamdi Ofoborh have mutually agreed to end his contract. The midfielder, who joined Rangers at the start of the 2021-22 season, has opted to pursue a career elsewhere. Everyone at Rangers wishes Nnamdi all the very best of luck for the future.”

A few weeks ago, Rangers manager Michael Beale had addressed Ofoborh’s situation, describing it as a deeply personal matter.
Beale recounted the club’s initial excitement about signing Ofoborh from Bournemouth but highlighted the unexpected health complications that arose after the medical examination.

Despite seeking the expertise of cardiologists and receiving multiple opinions, Ofoborh’s ability to train and play with the team remained significantly restricted. Beale emphasized the club’s unwavering support for the young midfielder throughout this challenging journey.

The club and the player have, however, decided to part ways.

Despite being born in Southwark, England, Nnamdi Ofoborh chose to represent Nigeria, the birthplace of his parents. He notably featured in the Flying Eagles squad during the Under-20 World Cup finals held in Poland in May–June 2019, making three appearances during the tournament.
