FIFA Women’s World Cup: Ex-Leicester City star optimistic of Super Falcons’ chances against England

The Super Falcons are underdogs going into the fixture in Brisbane, and only a superb performance would see them through

Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre is optimistic about Nigeria’s chances against England when they meet in the Round of 16 of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Soccernet reports.

Nine-time African champions Nigeria square off against European champions England on Monday at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

The Super Falcons are the underdogs going into the tie, as England have a lot of quality players. Also, the Lionesses were superb in the Group stage, winning all three of their games.

Randy Waldrum’s ladies will be looking to pull off an upset against England, and they could draw inspiration from their performances in the first round.

The Super Falcons picked five points from their group after a shocking win against co-hosts Australia and draws against Canada and Ireland.

Ahead of the game, former Leicester City defender Plumptre is optimistic they can pull the chestnut out of the fire.

“I think it will be a good game, and I know they are a very good team. I know their players from both club and international level,” Plumptre told the Super Falcons show.

“They have a lot to prove because they are European champions, but I think we’ve had some really good results in this tournament and caused some upsets. We have a team that can put up a really good show against England.

Plumptre has been impressive for Nigeria at left-back so far. She would look to put in another solid performance to see the Super Falcons through to the next round.
