Akpom’s future has been in the balance for months, but it could be settled soon
English Championship side Middlesbrough have accepted Ajax’s €12million+€2million bid for Nigerian striker Chuba Akpom, Soccernet reports.
Akpom’s future has been in the balance in recent months, especially after his outstanding campaign at Middlesbrough that saw him register 28 goals in 38 appearances.
With just one year left on his contract at Boro, there have been talks linking him with an exit. His absence in pre-season has further fueled talks of his departure, albeit Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick stated that he was nursing an injury.
Akpom has been linked with a number of clubs in the Premier League, including Everton, Sheffield United, and Crystal Palace. However, nothing concrete has come out of those talks.
Ligue 1 sides Lens and Lille also submitted bids for the 27-year-old, but they failed to agree with Boro.
Dutch giants Ajax entered the race last week, offering Middlesbrough €12million+€2million(add-ons), and according to David Ornstein, Middlesbrough have accepted their bid.
Akpom is set to travel to the Netherlands on Monday to undergo his medicals and complete the deal.
Ajax do not have adequate attacking options, and Akpom would be a decent addition. The Godenzonen play fast, free-flowing football. As such, Akpom could find a lot of joy at the club.
