The Nigerian attacker is set to complete a transfer to Netherlands’ biggest club, and he would be given an important role
Nigerian striker Chuba Akpom will wear the iconic number 10 jersey at Ajax after the completion of his transfer from Middlesbrough, Soccernet reports.
Akpom turned heads after a successful campaign with Middlesbrough that saw him register 28 goals in 38 English Champions appearances. Unfortunately, his performance was not enough to help the club gain promotion to the Premier League.
Akpom has just a year left on his current deal at Middlesbrough, and he refused to sign a new deal. Because of this, he has been heavily linked with a transfer away from Boro, with Everton, Sheffield United, Lens, and Lille all touted as potential destinations.
However, Ajax have emerged as the favourites to sign the 28-year-old after agreeing on a €12million+€2million[add-ons] deal with Boro.
The Arsenal Academy product has completed a medical, and Ajax should announce the completion of the transfer soon.
According to AFC Ajax, Akpom will wear the number 10 jersey at the club. The jersey is an iconic one in Amsterdam. Players like Johan Cruyff, Frank Rijkaard, Denis Bergkamp, Patrick Kluivert, and Wesley Sneijder have all donned the shirt.
The last player to wear number 10 for the Godenzonen was Dusan Tadic, who joined Fenerbahce this summer.
Akpom would look to replicate last season’s performance and help Ajax reclaim the Eredivisie title this season.
