New Napoli sporting director, Mauro Meluso, has spoken out about the ongoing transfer rumours surrounding Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, Soccernet.ng reports.
Meluso, a former director at Foggia, Padua, Pisa, and Sangiovannese, was appointed Napoli’s sporting director on July 12, as confirmed by a tweet from Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis. Meluso takes over from Cristiano Giuntoli, who recently assumed a similar role at Juventus.
While Giuntoli was responsible for bringing Osimhen to Naples in 2020, Meluso’s primary task may now involve negotiating the potential sale of the highly sought-after player.
Osimhen, who enjoyed a sensational season with Napoli, scoring 26 goals and playing a pivotal role in the club’s first Scudetto triumph in 33 years, has attracted the interest of numerous top European clubs.
However, only PSG may possess the financial means to meet Napoli’s demands, as the Italian club reportedly values Osimhen at €200 million.
PSG have already made an initial bid of €100 million for the 24-year-old striker, which Napoli promptly turned down.
In light of the ongoing transfer speculation, Meluso was asked during his introductory press conference in Dimaro about the possibility of convincing Osimhen to remain at Napoli.
In response, as per Tutto Napoli, the newly appointed Napoli sporting director stated, “I’ve just arrived, and I understand that retaining Osimhen would be a significant achievement. He brings a unique dimension to the team, and players like him are few and far between.
“However, I am still getting acquainted with the situation, and we will evaluate all options collectively with the management. Any decision made will be a joint one.”
Despite the interest from various clubs, Osimhen has consistently expressed his desire to stay in Naples and maintain his strong connection with the club’s passionate fanbase, who have shown him immense support.
Nonetheless, it is worth noting that the Nigerian striker has harboured a lifelong dream of playing in the English Premier League, with clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester United also vying for his signature alongside PSG.
