A superb display in the Europa League last season for Royale Union SG against Bayer Leverkusen has earned Nigerian striker Victor Boniface a move to Germany, Soccernet.ng reports
The 22-year-old will be plying his trade in the Bundesliga in the upcoming season, after sealing a lucrative £20m move to Bayer 04 Leverkusen from Royale Union Saint-Gilliose last Saturday.
He is currently one of the sought-after young talents in Europe, after a remarkable outing with Royale Union SG that saw him register 22 goals and 11 assists in 55 appearances last season.
His 6 goals in 10 games were enough to see him end the campaign as the joint top-scorer in the Europa League with Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford.
Boniface scored a goal for Saint-Gilliose in their 1-1 Europa League quarter-final first leg away at the Bay Arena last season, before the German side later progressed to the last four on a 5-2 aggregate.
Speaking after Bayer 04 Leverkusen completed the signing of the 22-year-old on a five-year contract, the club’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, said Boniface’s tremendous performance against his club in the Europa League last season affirmed their positive assessment of him as a striker full of qualities.
Victor Boniface has been on our radar for some time, Said the Leverkusen sporting managing director Simon Rolfes
His Performance against us absolutely confirmed our positive assessment. Victor is a very commanding and difficult to handle centre forward who will be a challenge for every defender with his physicality. In addition, he is also quick and has good technique, Rolfes told the club’s website
Over the long term, we now have a strong and versatile striker with potential in our ranks. He will help us improve the quality of our squad for a large number of games in the Bundesliga, DFB Cup, and the Europa League.
For the 22-year-old Nigerian striker, the move to the German club is a dream come true, and he’s looking forward to starting another chapter of his career under the tutelage of former Liverpool and Real Madrid legend Xabi Alonso.
The move to Leverkusen is a special opportunity I definitely wanted to take up. I’ve already experienced the atmosphere here at the stadium and back then was able to access the possibilities at this club, Said Boniface during his unveiling at the Bay Arena
After our talk I know now: This is a top club with a brilliant team. I’m really looking forward to playing football here and I want to play my part in the future success of Bayer Leverkusen.
The 22-year-old will join the illustrious list of Nigerian players to have graced the German League.
