‘Proud’ Super Eagles coach Peseiro hails ‘brilliant’ Flying Eagles after upset win over Argentina U20

Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro has expressed his delight and pride following the Flying Eagles’ historic victory over highly-favoured Argentina in the Round of 16 at the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup, Soccernet.ng reports.

The young Albiceleste, with an impressive record of six U20 World Cup titles, were expected to dominate the match against the Flying Eagles on their home turf at the Estadio San Juan.

Argentina had topped Group A after winning all three games, scoring an impressive ten goals. Nigeria, on the other hand, finished third in Group D despite winning two of their matches.

However, the Flying Eagles showcased their grit and determination, netting two crucial goals in the second half courtesy of Ibrahim Muhammad and Haliru Sarki.

This victory not only marked Nigeria’s first-ever triumph over Argentina at this level but also propelled them to the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2011.

Expressing his thoughts on the social media platform Twitter, Peseiro wrote, “Brilliant game today! Proud of our U20 team who fought valiantly and emerged victorious against Argentina. This is a testament to their determination, skill, and the spirit of Nigerian football. Onward to the quarterfinals.”
