The French Ligue 1 ended on Saturday after 38 grueling weeks of action, Soccernet.ng reports. PSG already sealed their sixth consecutive title weeks ago, but there were other battles.
Super Eagles forward Moses Simon who has had a disappointing campaign with his Nantes side was on the brink of relegation. However, a strong final-day performance helped them preserve their place in the French top-flight.
Nantes were two points behind Auxerre, and they needed to win and hope that their fellow relegation fighters would drop points against Lens for them to stand a chance of survival.
Fortunately for Nantes, Auxerre were playing Lens who are second in Ligue 1. But Nantes had the luxury of playing bottom-placed Angers.
Simon did not start the previous game, and he also started from the bench against Angers. Nantes scored in the first half through Ignatius Ganago to put themselves at a vantage point.
Simon was introduced into the game in the 70th minute, but he did not add much to the game. Nonetheless, Nantes saw out the 1-0 victory at Stade de la Beaujoire. Meanwhile, at the other center in Auxerre, the home side lost 3-1 to high-flying Lens.
The result ensured that Nantes stayed afloat in the French top-flight in the 16th position. For Moses, it was a rough campaign. He had five goals and four assists in 34 appearances.
Elsewhere at the Allianz Riviera, Terem Moffi scored for Nice in their 3-1 victory against Lyon. The Nigerian striker failed to score in his previous four games. But he ended the season on a high, starring in their win against Lyon.
He took his tally to 16 for the season. Gaetan Laborde scored one of the goals for Nice, while Lyon defender Jerome Boateng scored an own goal. Nice finished ninth on the table.
The relegated clubs are Auxerre, Ajaccio, Angers, and Troyes. Lens qualified for the Champions League, while Marseille will play in the qualifiers.
