Nottingham Forest looked like they would return to the Championship, but Awoniyi helped them survive
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has hailed his Nottingham Forest teammates and fans for their support throughout the just concluded Premier League season, Soccernet.ng reports.
Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin last summer. The Nigerian striker arrived with a big reputation in Germany, but he was just one of over 20 arrivals at the club.
The team struggled for chemistry, and Awoniyi himself had a rough start. He announced himself with a goal against West Ham in the Tricky Trees’ second game of the season to give them their first win of the season.
However, the team struggled to keep up, falling into the relegation battle late in the season. Awoniyi managed to score three more goals until the turn of the year when he sustained an injury.
The 25-year-old returned to action in March after a three-month layoff at a time when it looked bleak for the Tricky Trees. He struggled to hit his stride in his first seven games after he returned.
However, Awoniyi had a stellar finish to the campaign. The former Liverpool man scored six goals to help Nottingham Forest pick up eight points from a possible 12 in their final games of the season.
His heroics ensured that Nottingham Forest stayed afloat in the league, and he finished as their highest goalscorer in the league.
Throughout the team’s struggles last season, the Nottingham Forest fans stood with the team. Awoniyi took to social media to celebrate the fans and his teammates.
“Having therefore obtained the help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great,” Awoniyi said.
“Once a dream, dream it and believe for he makes all things possible. What incredible support Nottingham Forest FC throughout the season. I love you Reds.
Nottingham Forest would look to consolidate their performance this season, and Awoniyi would be there to lead the line.
