Osimhen: Napoli star equals George Weah’s 23-year-old Serie A record, eclipses Eto’o’s mark

The Nigerian striker has matched a George Weah record that was set in 2000

Victor Osimhen’s goal for Napoli against Udinese on Thursday means that the Nigeria striker has matched a Serie A record that has stood for 23 years.

Although Sandi Lovric had given the hosts a 13th minute lead having been set up by Nigeria prospect Destiny Udogie, nevertheless, the former Lille striker ensured the showdown ended 1-1 inside Stadio Friuli with his 52nd minute beauty.

In netting against the White and Blacks, Osimhen equalled a feat only achieved by African football great George Weah with 46 goals.

The Liberian attained that mark in 2000 during his time at Italian giants AC Milan. After an impressive spell with the Red and Blacks, Weah went on loan at Chelsea before joining Manchester City permanently.

While the 1995 Ballon d’Or winner recorded his mark in 114 matches, the Nigeria international attained his Italian elite division mark in just 81 appearances.

Another record that tumbled for Osimhen saw him shatter Samuel Eto’o record being the highest scoring African ever in a single season.

During the 2010-11 campaign, the four-time African Player of the Year scored 21 times as Rafael Benitez’s Inter Milan finished second in the competition.

With 22 goals so far, the Super Eagle not only overtook the Barcelona, but also stay in contention to claim the topscorer prize – although Lautaro Martinez is not relenting with 19 strikes to his credit.

Napoli have won the Serie A diadem 33 years after their previous Scudetto (April 29th, 1990), only AS Roma waited longer between two Serie A titles, 41 years since 1942 to 1983.
