“I saw the goal”- Liverpool legend likens Taiwo Awoniyi for Chelsea’s Didier Drogba

The Super Eagles striker scored twice against Southampton to bring his Premier League goal total to six

Liverpool great, Jamie Carragher, has compared Nigeria international, Taiwo Awoniyi, to Ivorian football icon, following his performance against Southampton, Soccernet.ng reports.

At the City Ground Stadium, The Tricky Trees welcomed Ruben Selles’ army and caused further damage to the South Coast team as they managed to defeat them in a seven-goal thriller in which Awoniyi scored a vital brace.

The former Liverpool defender, who is now a Sky Sports analyst, said that one of Awoniyi’s strikes in the first half reminded him of Didier Drogba, a Chelsea legend.

Brennan Johnson’s accurate ball to the Super Eagles attacker gave Steve Cooper’s team the lead in the 18th minute of Nottingham’s 4-3 triumph against the Saints.

Three minutes later, Awoniyi improved the situation for the Reds and himself when he skillfully twisted and beat Southampton custodian Alex McCarthy to the ball.

Following this, Carragher remarked that Awoniyi’s turning reminded him of the former Galatasaray striker when speaking during the halftime break on Monday Night Football.

“He reminded me of Drogba as soon as I saw the goal,“ he said, as quoted by Nottinghampost.

“Absolutely brilliant. I’ve been in that position as a defender. The turn – and bang. Brilliant.” he added.

Yesterday, the Nigerian striker earned his first double in the English Premier League and his eighth brace overall in his professional football career.
