Selles’ contract with Southampton will not be extended when it expires at the conclusion of the current campaign after discussions with him
Southampton football club has announced that interim manager Ruben Selles will oversee his last match in charge of the squad against Liverpool, Soccernet.ng reports.
When Southampton unlocked the exit door for Nathan Jones in February, the Spaniard took over as the Saints’ head coach. However, he has been unable to prevent the team from being demoted to the second tier.
This indicates, however, that two Super Eagles players, Paul Onuachu and Joe Aribo, who have lost favour in Southampton’s starting lineup, will get a fresh start under new leadership.
Despite having a goal-scoring record in the Jupiler Pro League, Onuachu has struggled to adapt into Selles’s system since arriving from KRC Genk at the tail end of the January transfer window.
Aribo’s situation is similar. He joined Southampton last summer for €7.10 million, but since Selles took over, he has only made three appearances and has not been selected for nine of the games that Southampton has played.
While Southampton’s fate has been determined, if the two players elect to stay, the new management may find them more suitable to lead their Championship campaign.
