England name three players of Nigerian descent in U20 World Cup squad

England have announced their squad for the upcoming Under-20 World Cup, with three players of Nigerian descent included in the lineup.

The squad features a talented group of players from top Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal, and Brentford.

The most prominent name in the squad is Carney Chukwuemeka, a highly-rated midfielder from Chelsea. Chukwuemeka, who joined Chelsea from Aston Villa for a fee of £20 million, is considered one of the most promising young talents in English football.

Despite struggling to break into the Chelsea first team, he showcased his abilities during England’s triumphant campaign in the Under-19 European Championship last summer.

Joining Chukwuemeka in the squad are Daniel Oyegoke from Brentford and Sam Edozie from Southampton, both of Nigerian heritage.

Oyegoke, a defender, has been a standout performer for Brentford, while Edozie has impressed with his performances for Southampton.

The England Under-20 squad also includes promising talents from other renowned clubs.

Chelsea is well-represented with the inclusion of Harvey Vale, Bashir Humphreys, and Teddy Sharman-Lowe. Tottenham contributes Alfie Devine and Dane Scarlett, while Arsenal’s Brooke Norton-Cuffy also made the cut.

The tournament will take place in Argentina, commencing on May 20. England’s first match will be against Tunisia in Buenos Aires on May 22, followed by fixtures against Uruguay and Iraq in the group stage.

The squad’s announcement highlights the diverse and multicultural nature of English football, with players from various backgrounds being given opportunities to represent the country at the international level.

The inclusion of Chukwuemeka, Oyegoke, and Edozie not only underscores their talents but also reflects the growing inclusivity within the sport, where players from diverse cultural backgrounds contribute to the success of national teams.
