Sunday Oliseh finds himself in Ndidi but prefers Chelsea’s Kante

Wilfred Ndidi is a key member of Leicester City and has helped the side win the English FA Cup and the Community Shield

Former Super Eagles star, Sunday Oliseh, has nothing but admiration for Leicester City midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi, but in specific circumstances, he would prefer Ngolo Kante’s tactics.

Under Oliseh’s leadership, the former KRC Genk player was called up to the Super Eagles squad in 2015 and has since made 47 appearances for Nigeria’s national side.

Oliseh meanwhile said that he enjoys seeing the 26-year-old play—not because he called him up, but rather because he finds himself in the Nigerian midfielder.

The now-47-year-old played as a defensive midfielder and was renowned for knowing his role too well, concentrating more on ball retention and passing.

The Leicester City star has often been seen employing this similar technique in both the Leicester City midfield and the Super Eagles’ midfield, which has helped him give balance to the team’s game.

In response to the question of which player on the current Super Eagles squad most closely matches his style, Oliseh remarked on the ATHLST podcast, “I like watching Wilfred Ndidi play, not because I gave him his first national call-up, not at all. But I like his style of play because one thing about playing as a defensive midfielder or playing the role of a goalkeeper or the Central defence is that to do that, you will have to work for others. The goalkeeper doesn’t have time to show skills but has to correct others’ errors.

“Defensive midfielders are always saving others, so anybody playing that role must be selfless as a human being to play it well”

When asked who he would recruit if he were the Real Madrid manager, the former Borussia Dortmund player responded with Chelsea midfielder Ngolo Kante, but he provided why.

“The most difficult part of that job [Defensive Midfielder] Kante does it better” he added.

Ndidi’s injuries, which prevented him from playing for Leicester City in October and January, respectively, have limited his playing time this season.
