Southampton boss hints on Onuachu’s role against Manchester City

Onuachu has struggled for game time since Ruben Selles became coach, but his fortunes may improve soon

Southampton coach Ruben Selles has hinted that Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu may be given a more prominent role when Southampton play Manchester City next weekend.

Onuachu joined Southampton from Genk in January in a deal worth €18million. However, he has struggled for game time since he arrived at the club.

The 28-year-old striker has only made seven appearances since he arrived at the club, most of which have been off the bench.

However, Onuachu may just have gotten himself a place in the starting eleven after his performance against West Ham in the Saints’ previous game.

The former Genk man was a constant threat to West Ham immediately after coming on. He could have scored a header, but he was denied by the woodwork.

Speaking after their loss to West Ham, Southampton boss Selles admitted that Onuachu may be a vital weapon as the fight to avoid relegation heats up.

“When we brought him(Onuachu) in against West Ham, he was attracting defenders and we opened up more situations for crossing actions and that’s where his chance came,” Selles said per Hampshire live.

“I think we managed better bringing a player like Paul into the pitch and we need to continue because it can be a big weapon for us if we continue.”

Southampton play Manchester City at the weekend, and following his last performance, Selles could appoint Onuachu to lead the line.

Onuachu is the tallest player in the Premier League, and Selles may be looking to use aerial balls. The Nigerian hitman would hope that he gets his chance on Saturday.
